Mission

The main objective of Security Services at Lakehead University Orillia campus is to maintain a safe, secure and orderly campus.  The security officers maintain a strong presence on campus during all hours of operations.  In addition to regular patrols, the officers are equipped to meet most emergencies including fires, and non-life threatening injuries.  Any concerns relating to trespassing, suspicious activity or vandalism will be met with an immediate response.

The security personnel are friendly, helpful and courteous.  In addition to their regular duties, the officers are always willing to escort students to their vehicles or bus stop after dark.

In a life threatening emergency to a person or an immediate risk to property, dial 911 directly.  Then contact security so that they are aware of the situation.  For example;  in the event of a crime in progress, a fire, or medical emergency.

Safety Tips

  • Never use your first name in the telephone directories or mailboxes and of course, avoid prefixes: Mrs., Miss, or Ms. List your first name initial only.
  • If you are female, have a male friend do your answering machine message.
  • After moving into a new home or apartment, it is a good idea to change the door locks. Every window that can be entered from the outside should have a good lock and be properly secured. Don't forget to check with your landlord first.
  • If someone wants to use your phone, no matter what the alleged emergency is, offer to make the call; but do not open the door.
  • Always keep windows secured and covered at night. Never reveal, either in person or to a telephone caller, that you are alone. Have two lights on in different locations of the house. This gives the impression of more than one person at home. To secure sliding doors, place a strong wooden broom handle or dowel in the lower track of the door.
  • Don't advertise when you are leaving for long periods of time
  • In apartment buildings, be wary of deserted laundry rooms.
  • Do not buzz people into the building that you don't know. Tell them you will come down and check before you let them in. Call the superintendent or maintenance person if there is one.
  • Ensure you have personal renter's insurance; speak to you or your parents insurance company
  • Be aware of fire safety.

Vehicle Safety

  • If you are walking to your vehicle, have your car keys ready and in your hand so you are not standing by your vehicle searching for them.
  • If you have an alarm, use it in emergency situations, such as to deter someone from your car.
  • When your vehicle is not occupied, always roll up your car windows and lock your car doors to discourage vandalism and theft.
  • Observe everything around you as you walk to your car. Choose your route to avoid anything/anyone who looks suspicious or and area that is not well lit.
  • Always note where you're parked.
  • Don't leave a purse, backpack or other valuables in view; put them under the seat or locked in the trunk.
  • Always carry a cell phone.
  • Orillia winters can be unpredictable.  Ensure that your car is well equipped to deal with the elements.  Have:
             o An ice scraper
             o Windshield washer fluid
             o Winter gloves
             o A blanket / extra clothing
             o Jumper cables
             o Bag of sand / salt and a small shovel
             o Flashlight and batteries
  • If being followed, don't drive home or leave the car. Drive to the nearest police station, fire station, store or service station.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers or accept rides with strangers.
